Louis-Cyprien Rials

3 Zones, 2014 Commissioned for the exhibition " Welcome to the End of History " by Robert Kluijver - Framer Framed - in Tolhuistuin, Amsterdam. Louis-Cyprien Rials (Paris, 1981) has spent much of the past ten years traveling in Japan or on his motorcycle, touring the forgotten zones of European history, sleeping in the ruins of modernist buildings. The present work leads us through the following three zones, which he visited in 2010 and 2011: Northern Cyprus: from the Greek part of Nicosia, through the demilitarized zone guarded by the UN (UNFICYP) and the abandoned international airport, to Famagusta (Gazimağusa) and its abandoned tourist infrastructures. Chernobyl exclusion zone: the city of Pripyat (evacuated by its 50.000 inhabitants days after the nuclear meltdown of 1987) and surrounding areas including the Over-the-horizon radar DUGA-3 (Дуга-3)and the leftover of the Chernobyl vehicle graveyard. Nagorno-Karabakh: this majority-Armenian enclave in Azerbaijan was the object of a war between Armenia and Azerbaijan from 1991 to 1994; its autonomy has not been recognized to date and the conflict remains unsettled. The travels go to the border of Armenia, to the city of Aghdam, in the no man's land between Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaïjan. Some sounds included in the soundtracks are originaly recorded at the time of the evacuation of these zones. Turkish soldier applauding their victory in 1974. Recording of a documentary presenting the Chernobyl nuclear plant in a glorious way. Sounds of the radar DUGA-3 ( Дуга-3 ) recorded by amateur radio and azeri music played by refugees when they left the city of Aghdam. The artist has never shown these images before.
